Madsen Monday: How To See Your Wardrobe With Fresh Eyes

How is it possible to have a closet full of clothes and still have nothing to wear?! This is something no one is immune too, not even me! (Fact: it is so much easier for me to see a clients closet and come up with 15 new looks on the spot, than it is for me to come up with a single one in my own!)

I’ve always saved this Kate Spade dress for special occasions, but by pairing it with my denim jacket and white booties I’m able to wear it more often!

I knew this was a problem for two reasons. First being the obvious, I have a closet stuffed with gorgeous items and second, I can’t afford a new wardrobe. So to keep me from going into debt, I challenged myself to start looking at my clothing in a new way. I needed to stop wearing the same things over and over, stop compartmentalizing pieces for certain events, and start thinking outside the box.

I knew how to pull items together and create a look, but I wasn’t good at crossing boundaries and pairing items together that I normally wouldn’t. I took a long look at my work clothes, causal clothes, dressy items, etc. and tried to thinking about pairing items together in a new way. I found I could quadrupled my options with this simple trick. I started wearing denim and leather jackets with my work dresses. For dressier tops I paired them with skinny jeans and my sexy pumps that never get worn. I even paired my maxi dresses with vests and booties. I found that by crossing the invisible closet lines, I started to see my wardrobe in a whole new light. Even my wallet thanked me.
